Itinerary

Day 01: Racca – Soccma - Piruchayoc.

MachupicchuWe drive to the bridge of Pomatale, from where we will hike 20 minutes until we reach the Inka temple of Chokekillka located on the side of a mountain, between two huge rocks surrounded by Andean terraces. . We will have an introduction to the Inka cosmovision and its relationship with the natural elements. After this, we drive for 10 minutes to the starting point towards de community of Soccma.

Here, we will visit a school and a local house, both representing the country lifestyle and the importance of corn. After a picnic lunch we continue the trek uphill to the waterfalls of Piruchayoc (100 mts). We continue the hike over the waterfalls to our first camp on the Inka sightseeing and control point of Piruchayoc, which has an amazing view of the Soccma valley, Maras plateau and Chicon snow-capped mountain. (L and D).

Distance hike: 7 km. Uphill

Day 02: Piruchayoc – Chancachuco

MachupicchuAfter breakfast we start to walk following an Inka water channel; the trail goes up to Ccorimarca valley through ancient terraces where the locals still grow crops. We hike up to our first pass from where we have an amazing view of the snow-capped mountains of the Urubamba range (Veronica, Chicón, Ausangate, Pachatusan and Salcantay) and the fields of Chincheros, Moray and Maras plateau.

After a break and a snack, we continue through the small valley of Chancachuco, where we will have lunch next to the Andean lake of Maracocha, which feeds water into the stream of Chancachuco through a long Inka water channel of 18 km. At this point we will have the opportunity to admire Andean birdlife, such as the Andean goose, the Cara Cara, the Andean flicker, among others. After a rest and our picnic lunch we continue downhill to our next campsite, with a spectacular view of the snow peak Huayanay, located in the Vilcabamba range (North). We will also have the opportunity to visit a local family house whose economy is based on potato farming and breeding of sheep. (B, L, D).

Camp altitude: 3, 800 mts. First pass altitude: 4,200 mts.
Distance hike from Camp 1 to the pass: 5 kms. 4 hours of hike.
Distance from pass to the camp 2: 4 kms. 2 hours of hike

Day 03: Chancachuco - Cachiccata Quarry and Community Camp.

MachupicchuEarly in the morning, we will head to the second pass over the Apu Buena Negra, from where we will have a spectacular birds-eye view of the Sacred Valley of the Inkas and the snow peaks of the Urubamba range.

From this pass we will hike downhill following the trail until we join the Inka water channel coming from Maracocha lake. From here we will reach the temple call Intiwatana, located on the edge of the mountain Apu Alambre, located in front of the Veronica, where traditional pagos (offerings to mother earth) are made.

We also have a great view of the Pakaritampu pyramid. We will then continue downhill to the archaeological site of Choquetacarpo, where we will have lunch. After this, we will walk downhill to visit one of the biggest Inka quarries in Cusco, which supplied stones for the town and fortress of Ollantaytambo, which to be slided down the hill and over the river in order to reach the fortress. Tonight, we will sleep in a beautiful campsite owned by a group of young local people from the Cachiccata community. From here we will enjoy a wonderful view of this community as well as of Ollantaytambo and Veronica snow-capped mountain.

Altitude: 4,300 m.a.s.l
Lenght of hike: 8 km (7 hours)

Day 04: Transfer to. Ollantaytambo Train Station – Machu Picchu.

Optional: Early hike around the community and transfer to Ollantaytambo train station to take the train to Aguas Calientes. We will visit the Machupicchu Sanctuary. Guided tour.

At afternoon the train goes back to Cusco from the Aguas Calientes train station.
